Avoid This 6-Figure Mistake with Your Home

In this week’s Insider Real Estate Secrets newsletter, I thought it might be helpful to share a personal story that has been both very challenging and expensive for our family.

My hope is that by sharing this story, you’ll be able to avoid these same challenges with your home.

My father and step-mother have owned a home in Chesterland for over 60 years.

And sadly, despite suggesting that they hire an estate planning attorney years ago, they never did anything to protect their home and other assets. :-(

They’ve both recently moved into a nursing home and we’re now in the process of selling ALL of their assets (including their cars and their home) to cover the extremely high cost of their care, which exceeds 20k a month!

When their home is sold, they will end up using the proceeds of their sale to cover the cost of their care until they are finally able to get approved for Medicaid.

This entire situation could have been completely avoided had they put their home into a irrevocable trust several years ago.

The tricky part about protecting your home is that you must do so at least 5 years prior to the need for any assisted living or nursing home care because Medicaid has a 5-year look back period as part of their approval process.

Yes, thinking through all of this isn’t very much fun, but it’s extremely important if you want to protect your assets for your children and grandchildren.

Please understand that I’m not an attorney and this isn’t legal advice. I’m simply sharing a very costly mistake that has had ripple effects in our family.

My hope is that you’ll consider taking action now by working with an experienced estate planning attorney to protect your home and other valuable assets.

And if you’re reading this and have older parents, please discuss this costly mistake with them before it’s too late.
